Back in 2006, I wrote about a party hosted by Living With Legends, a blog that (still) chronicles daily life at the Chelsea Hotel. At the time no one had any idea this would be near the end of Stanley Bard’s 45-year tenure as the manager of the hotel, which has since gone through almost a decade of upheaval and destruction as a result of ownership changes. The piece I wrote for the Times is like a little time capsule, as it took place in the apartment where Thomas Wolfe once lived and where he wrote, appropriately enough, You Can’t Go Home Again (that apartment has since been torn apart). In 2006 I chatted with and photographed some long-time residents who gathered to honor their adopted home as “a rest stop for rare individuals.” It truly was the last Bohemian outpost.
